What is the Quadruple Test?

The Quadruple Test, also known as the Quad Screen or Quadruple Marker Test, is a prenatal screening tool that provides important information about the risk of certain genetic conditions in your baby. It is typically performed between weeks 15 and 20 of pregnancy.

How does the Quadruple Test work?

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP): AFP is a protein produced by the baby’s liver. Abnormal levels of AFP may indicate a higher risk of neural tube defects, such as spina bifida or anencephaly.
Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG): HCG is a hormone produced by the placenta. Deviations from normal HCG levels may be associated with chromosomal abnormalities, including Down syndrome.
Estriol: Estriol is an estrogen hormone produced by the placenta and the baby’s liver. Low levels of estriol may indicate a higher risk of chromosomal abnormalities.
Inhibin-A: Inhibin-A is a hormone produced by the placenta. Elevated levels of inhibin-A may suggest an increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities.

What can the Quadruple Test detect?

The Quadruple Test is primarily used to assess the risk of Down syndrome (Trisomy 21) and other chromosomal abnormalities, such as Trisomy 18 and Trisomy 13. Additionally, the test can help identify neural tube defects, including spina bifida and anencephaly.
It is important to note that the Quadruple Test is a screening tool, not a diagnostic test. A positive result from the Quadruple Test indicates an increased risk but does not provide a definitive diagnosis. In case of a positive result, further diagnostic testing, such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS), may be recommended to confirm or rule out the presence of a genetic condition.
