Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment that involves placing sperm directly into a woman’s uterus around the time of ovulation. This procedure increases the chances of sperm reaching the egg, facilitating fertilization and improving the likelihood of pregnancy.

Who is IUI for?

IUI is often recommended for couples facing:

  • Unexplained Infertility: When the cause of infertility is unknown, IUI can be an effective treatment.
  • Mild Male Factor Infertility: Low sperm count or motility can be bypassed by placing sperm directly into the uterus.
  • Cervical Mucus Problems: IUI helps when cervical mucus is too thick for sperm to travel through naturally.
  • Ovulation Problems: IUI may be combined with ovulation-inducing medications.

How Does IUI Work?

  • Ovarian Stimulation: Medications may be prescribed to stimulate the ovaries and increase egg production.
  • Monitoring: Ultrasound scans and blood tests are conducted to monitor follicle development and timing of ovulation.
  • Sperm Preparation: A semen sample is collected and processed to concentrate the sperm, improving the chances of fertilization.
  • Insemination: The prepared sperm is placed into the uterus using a thin, flexible catheter.
