Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a chronic condition where the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus, called the endometrium, grows outside the uterus. This misplaced tissue can be found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, outer surface of the uterus, and in rare cases, on other organs within the pelvis. Endometriosis affects women of reproductive age, often causing significant pain and infertility.

Symptoms

Endometriosis presents a variety of symptoms that can vary from person to person. Some common symptoms include:
Pelvic pain: Women with endometriosis often experience chronic pelvic pain, which may worsen during menstruation or sexual intercourse.
Painful periods: Severe menstrual cramps that go beyond what is considered normal.
Heavy or irregular bleeding: Excessive bleeding or irregular menstrual cycles.
Painful bowel movements or urination: Discomfort or pain during bowel movements or urination, especially during menstruation.
Infertility: Endometriosis can contribute to difficulties in conceiving. It is important to note that the severity of symptoms does not always correlate with the extent of the condition.

Causes and Risk Factors

Some possible factors that may contribute to the development of endometriosis include:
Retrograde menstruation: Menstrual blood containing endometrial cells flows back into the pelvic cavity instead of being expelled from the body.
Hormonal imbalances: Fluctuations in estrogen levels may promote the growth of endometrial tissue.
Genetic predisposition: Endometriosis tends to run in families, suggesting a genetic component.
Immune system dysfunction: A weakened immune system may fail to recognize and eliminate the misplaced endometrial tissue.
Risk factors for endometriosis include a family history of the condition, starting menstruation at an early age, shorter menstrual cycles, and never giving birth.

Diagnosis

If you suspect you may have endometriosis, it is important to consult a healthcare professional who specializes in gynecology. Diagnosing endometriosis often involves:
Medical history and symptom evaluation: Your doctor will discuss your symptoms, medical history, and perform a physical examination.
Imaging tests: Ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans may be used to visualize the pelvic region and detect any endometrial growths.
Laparoscopy: A minimally invasive surgical procedure may be performed to directly visualize the pelvic organs and obtain tissue samples for biopsy, providing a definitive diagnosis.

Treatment Options

At Jogal Women’s Hospital, we offer a range of treatment options tailored to your specific needs. The goal of treatment is to manage pain, improve quality of life, and address fertility concerns. Treatment options may include:
Pain management: Over-the-counter pain relievers or hormonal medications to reduce pain and inflammation.
Hormonal therapy: Birth control pills, progestin-only medications, or GnRH agonists to regulate hormone levels and alleviate symptoms.
Surgical intervention: Laparoscopic surgery to remove endometrial growths (excision) or remove the uterus and ovaries (hysterectomy) in severe cases.
Fertility treatment: Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) may be recommended for women trying to conceive. Our experienced healthcare professionals will guide you through the available treatment options and help you make informed decisions based on your individual circumstances.
