What is a C-Section Delivery?

A cesarean section, commonly known as a C-section, is a surgical procedure used to deliver a baby through an incision made in the mother’s abdomen and uterus. It is performed when vaginal delivery poses risks to the mother or baby or when certain medical conditions make a C-section the safest option. Some reasons for a C-section may include:
Previous C-section delivery
Multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets)
Complications during pregnancy or labor
Baby in a breech position (feet or buttocks first)
Placenta previa (placenta covering the cervix)
Fetal distress etc.

Preparing for a C-Section

Once determined that a C-section is the best delivery option for you, we will guide you through the necessary preparations. These may include:
Pre-operative evaluation: You will undergo a thorough evaluation to assess your overall health and readiness for surgery.
Anesthesia options: Our anesthesiologists will discuss the different types of anesthesia available, such as regional anesthesia (spinal or epidural) or general anesthesia, and help you choose the most suitable option for you.
Birth plan discussion: We encourage you to discuss your birth preferences with your healthcare provider, allowing us to accommodate your wishes as much as possible while prioritizing safety.

The C-Section Procedure

During the C-section procedure, you will be in an operating room with a dedicated surgical team. Here’s an overview of what to expect:
Anesthesia administration: If you are receiving regional anesthesia, an anesthesiologist will numb the lower half of your body while keeping you awake and alert. If general anesthesia is necessary, you will be asleep during the surgery.
Surgical incision: The surgeon will make a horizontal incision in your lower abdomen, typically just above the pubic hairline.
Baby delivery: Once the incision is made, the surgeon will carefully deliver your baby through the incision.
Placenta removal and closure: After your baby is safely delivered, the surgeon will remove the placenta and close the incision with sutures or staples.
Post-operative care: You will be transferred to the recovery area, where our nurses will monitor your vital signs and assist with pain management and breastfeeding initiation, if desired.
